Office politics is about being nice Here is a message for people who say office politics dont matter: You will die a slow, painful career death. This is because theres no getting around office politics, and mastering them is essential to being able to steer your own career. Dont take that as bad news, though, because mastering office politics is good for your soul. Really. Office politics is inescapable because its about dealing with the people. A small percentage of people are mentally unable to understand office politics. The rest of you need to get with the program. Because where there is a group of people anywhere, even on the playground there is politics. Lets say you pack up your bags and go work in a national park, with trees and rivers and no cubicles. There will be politics about who has to take care of hikers when its raining and who gets to stay dry, and if you are bad at politics, you will be wet every time. Politics is part of society. And my guess is that you want to participate in society (at least) so that you can support yourself. But people who are good at politics are generally empathetic (they understand who needs what) and they have good self-discipline (they can moderate themselves so they are pleasant to be with.) Most people who hate politics think they have to change who they are to succeed. Really, though, anyone who is being their best self kind, considerate, expressive, interested in others will do fine in office politics. So get to know yourself. Saying you just cant do politics is giving up on being your best self. And wait, theres more good news about office politics. If you really take a look at whats going on over there at the water cooler, people are not jockeying for power, they are hobnobbing for projects. Thats right. For most people in todays workplace, office politics is about getting the best opportunities to learn and grow; the best projects, the best training, the assignments that build skills the market values. Office chatter with the vapid goal of getting power over other people is, frankly, a little offensive. But it is hard to fault people for wanting to grow and learn. In fact, I find more fault with people who care so little about personal growth that they wont spend the extra energy politicking to get themselves on good projects. Maybe you are convinced, but you are feeling at a loss to get started. Here are four things that people who are good at office politics do: 1. Make time for it both in terms of face time, and time alone to analyze the face time. 2. Listen. How can you learn anything when youre talking about what you already know? 3. Have genuine interest in other people. Each person is interesting if you are interested enough to ask the right question. 4. Practice empathy. This means putting yourself in other peoples shoes all the time. And not judging them. Maybe youre still thinking of being the person at the office who abstains from office politics. Realize that you wont last long in the office, that is. Putting your head down and doing your work is a good way to ensure that you dont connect with anyone. This situation is deadly in a world where people are hired for what they know and fired for who they are. People need to get to know you in order to like you. The act of making yourself likeable is office politicking. You shouldnt have to be fake if you are a genuinely nice and interested person. If office politics requires you to do something that feels fake, consider that you were not likeable in the first place. For you, office politics is training ground to teach yourself to be likeable, and, as a side benefit, you will save your job. For others, office politics is the time at work when you get to be your best, true, self in search of more learning opportunities and more human connections.

It embodies all sorts of clichés: you’re in over your head; you’re in deep; you’re in a bad place, and you might not make it out. But unpleasantries aside, why do you feel so swamped? We’re willing to bet it’s because you have too much to doâ€"more than you can even possibly get done. And yet, important people and important things are relying on your herculean efforts to somehow manage the impossible. Well, it turns out, you’re not alone. Our latest study shows that when it comes to managing our time and to-do lists, we’re habitually overcommitted and overwhelmed. Of the 1,353 people we surveyed, 3 out of 5 agreed that they have more to accomplish than they can actually do in the time they have available. Another 1 in 5 say they have reached their limit and can’t possibly commit to more. And it turns out, our tendency to say yes to more than we can manage isn’t a fluke. In fact, 1 in 3 say they ALWAYS have more tasks in front of them than they can actually get done, and 2 in 3 say they USUALLY find themselves in this same predicament. But why do we put ourselves in such an uncomfortable and precarious position? According to the research, the top 5 reasons people attribute for their overgrown to-do lists include: A desire to be helpful, accommodating, and polite. The tendency to jump in and fix problems, even when they aren’t theirs. Ambiguous limits and unclear rules about which tasks to accept or reject. Working with those in authority who make non-negotiable demands. An inability to say “no” or renegotiate commitments. Our own observation over the years suggests this over-commitment epidemic is also the result of poorly-designed workflow management systems in a world that runs on the mantra: do more with less. Too many of us don’t have a system for organizing the various inputs that fly at us each and every day. And without a system designed to capture and organize incoming tasks and the skills to negotiate commitments, you’re bound to find yourself a victim of an impossible to-do list. Unless and until you take control of this system, you’ll continue to frantically spin your wheels and still only make a dent in that ever-growing list of commitments. And an impossible to-do list isn’t just exhausting, it also takes a toll on our emotional health. According to the study, people report feeling stressed, worried, anxious, overwhelmed, and even defeated as they look at their inflated list and regret agreeing to so much in the first place. The most alarming side effect is perhaps that people feel like they can’t be really presentâ€"meaning when they are with the people and things that matter most, they are multitasking or thinking about other tasks. But there is a solution. With just a few skills, it’s possible to regain control of your to-do list while also reducing stress. In fact, there are a small number of self-management practices that can have a profound impact. When you learn to manage your workload quickly and efficiently, you’ll not only take control of your to-do list but also avoid the weight and anxiety that comes with carrying an impossible workload. Below are five productivity practices that if adopted will help you realize these benefits while regaining control of your to-do list. 1. Collect everything that owns your attention Capture all commitments, tasks, ideas, and projects in an external place rather than keeping them in your head. Use just a few “capture tools” you keep with you all the time such as lists, apps, email, etc. 2. Do a Commitment audit Capture all of your commitments on one page. Then go down the list and decide which to-dos you will do, which you’ll decline, and which you’ll renegotiate. There’s no way you can do them all in the time given; be realistic about what you can and will do. 3. Identify Next Actions Most people are extra overwhelmed by their lists because they are filled with vague things like “Budget” or “2019 Event.” These large projects repulse us rather than motivate us to act. Clarify youre to-dos down to the very next action; the smallest behavior you’ll take to start moving toward closure. Sometimes the key to breaking a habit of procrastination is making the action smaller until you want to do it. 4. Do more of the right things by reflecting in the right moments Rather than diving into your messy inbox first thing, take two minutes to review your calendar and your action lists. This reflection ensures you make the best decisions about how to use your time. 5. Sure, You Fit the Job Description, But Do Your Interview Clothes Fit You Women have all heard the basics on appropriate dress for an interviewdont wear anything too short, tight, low cut, or sexy to an interview. But how do you go about finding the right look and style for your interview attire?  Last week I sat down with  Ilona Vanderwoude,  a professional resume writer and image consultant to go past the basics of interview attire to uncover what women should pay attention to in order to achieve the best fit. Heres what she had to say.  Body Type Whether buying clothes for an interview or for a social situation, knowing your body type and some basic guidelines for your posture will go a long way in purchasing clothes that will flatter you. Some things to pay attention to are your proportions. How long is your torso compared to your legs? Do you have wide shoulders, or do they slope? Which areas of your body pose a challenge when it comes to dressing?Suits With suits, you should check whether its a double breasted suit. This can work for some women, but it often makes you look boxy. Single-breasted tends to be more flattering on most body types. Another aspect is the length of the jacket. The bottom of the jacket should hit an area of your body that is flattering, i.e. not your widest part. The length of your torso compared to the length of your legs plays a role in this as well. If you have short legs in comparison to the rest of your body, be careful with jackets that are very long. It can make your legs look even shorter.Pants  When buying a pant suit, the most important thing is that the trousers are straight-legged. Pants that are tapered around the ankle are very unflattering-on anyone, seriously!-because they give you a shape like an ice cream cone, emphasizing your hips and making them look huge in comparison. So: straight legs (sometimes also referred to as boot cut), and make sure the hem hits your shoe. The goal is to create an elongating silhouette. The role of your pants is to be straight and as long as possible withou t completely covering your shoe. Too short is hideous too; you should not be able to see the part of your shoe above the heel (the part that actually holds your foot). If you plan on wearing your pant suit with a particular heel, its best to take these to the tailor with you so your trousers can be hemmed based on these shoes. As annoying as it may be, you will simply not be able to wear the same pants with a 4 inch heel and with flats. Something else that is not very flattering on most women: side pockets. When you sit down, these tend to gap. When you are standing or walking, they add width in an area most women would rather lose weight in: the hip area.Tailoring  A big part of a great look is in the tailoring. If a suit doesnt fit you properly, no matter how expensive it may have been, you will not achieve the desired effect. Its also a mistake to believe that you should be able to buy a suit off the rack and have it fit perfectly. Even if you have an easy size and if you find th e right size in the store, you will probably have to make certain alterations to make it truly fit. If you have a more challenging body type, shop for the biggest part of you. The rest-the areas that end up being too big can be taken in.Plus size  If you are a plus size, remember that oversized dressing does not really make you look slimmer. On the contrary.
